Groundbreaking Marine-Degradable Aluminum Composite Film Tackles Microplastic Pollution

In September 2024, a multinational materials conglomerate and the Chinese Academy of Sciences developed "EcoAlu-Pure," a marine-degradable aluminum composite film achieving over 90% biodegradation within 180 days in simulated seawater. The material combines modified polylactic acid (PLA) molecular bonding with aluminum foil, offering 45MPa tensile strength, ≥8N/15mm heat seal strength, and high barrier performance (WVTR ≤0.5g/m²·day).

SGS testing confirmed structural stability under deep-sea pressure (50MPa) and extreme temperatures (-20℃ to 80℃). Certified by ASTM D6691 and EN 13432, Japan's Maruha Nichiro signed a five-year exclusive supply deal for frozen seafood packaging, projected to prevent 32,000 tons of plastic waste annually.

The UNEP 2024 Global Plastics Treaty mandates phasing out non-essential single-use plastics by 2030. McKinsey estimates the global biodegradable packaging market will grow at 19.7% CAGR, reaching $84 billion by 2028. China offers 15% VAT reduction for adopters, driving technological upgrades across 200+ enterprises.
